Rosie Castro is a civil rights activist, and mother of former Presidential Democratic candidate Julian Castro and current U.S. House Representative Joaquin Castro. She was born in 1947 in San Antonio, Texas. Growing up in this community, Rosie was able to see firsthand from a very young age the injustices against her and her family. Her experiences growing up sparked her passion for activism and politics. She attended Our Lady of the Lake University and spearheaded a Young Democrats club. Rosie graduated in 1971 with a degree in Spanish. Rosie went back to school, and earned a master’s degree in Public Administration from the University of Texas at Austin. Rosie Castro was Vice-President of the Women’s division of the Young Democrats at the state level, Bexar County party chair of the Raza Unida Party, and President of the Bexar County Young Democrats. Although she holds no official office anymore, she continues to be involved in her community and travels to speak about her political experiences.
